Ready to become a safer, more skilled motorcyclist? Join us at Massbrook Driving School in Lahardane, Co. Mayo for our exciting new Roadcraft Rideout – Ride and Learn. This half-day introductory motorcycle training combines theory and real-world riding experience, helping you master the core principles of Roadcraft – the gold standard in rider safety and awareness.
Roadcraft is the official system of motorcycle riding used by advanced riders and emergency services across Ireland and the UK. It focuses on anticipation, hazard awareness, positioning, and planning – all essential for safe and confident motorcycling.
This module lays the groundwork for everything that follows by exploring what it truly means to be a safe, skilled, and self-aware motorcyclist. Through a mix of classroom discussion and practical riding, you’ll begin to understand the principles of advanced riding, identify key human factors that affect your safety, and develop a mindset of continuous improvement. Whether you’re returning to riding or looking to sharpen your roadcraft, this session will help you build strong habits from the outset.
In this module, we dive into the core framework that underpins all advanced riding—the System of Motorcycle Control (IPSGA). This structured yet flexible approach helps you respond to road situations with clarity, consistency, and confidence. By breaking down each phase of a manoeuvre—Information, Position, Speed, Gear, and Acceleration—you’ll learn to plan and ride proactively, rather than reactively. Through real-world examples and guided practice, you’ll see how IPSGA becomes second nature, allowing you to ride with greater safety, precision, and control.
Riding conditions aren’t always ideal—and this module prepares you to handle the worst with confidence. Whether it’s rain, fog, strong winds, darkness, or slippery road surfaces, challenging environments test your skills and judgment like nothing else. In this session, you’ll learn how to adapt your riding style to reduce risk and maintain control. From managing visibility and traction to understanding how environmental cues can signal danger, this module equips you with the knowledge and techniques to ride safely, whatever the weather or road throws your way.
Overtaking and filtering are powerful tools in a rider’s skillset—but only when used with good judgment and precise control. This module focuses on making smart, safe decisions when moving through or past traffic. You’ll explore the legal, practical, and risk-based aspects of overtaking and filtering, including how to assess visibility, choose the right position, and time your manoeuvres with confidence. Through discussion, scenario planning, and road-based practice, you’ll learn how to reduce uncertainty and take decisive action when the moment is right—all while prioritising safety, courtesy, and control.
Emergencies can happen in an instant—but how you respond can make all the difference. This module prepares you to stay calm, focused, and in control when the unexpected occurs. You’ll learn how to perform effective emergency stops, execute evasive manoeuvres, and manage high-pressure situations with confidence. Just as importantly, you’ll explore how to reduce the chances of emergencies in the first place through proactive planning and hazard awareness. With both practical drills and mental strategies, this session builds the skills and mindset you need to handle the unexpected and ride with resilience.
This final module brings together everything you’ve learned throughout the Advanced Rider Development programme. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate your progress, apply your skills in real-world scenarios, and receive constructive, supportive feedback from your instructor. Through a structured review ride and personalised coaching, you’ll showcase your control, planning, observation, and decision-making abilities across a variety of road situations. More than just an assessment, this session is a celebration of your growth as a rider—and a launchpad for continued development beyond the course.
