What is EDT Essential Driver Training and why do I need it?

Essential Driver Training, or EDT for short, is a training focused on teaching fundamental driving skills. The RSA introduced this mandatory course as part of the their Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme with the aim to improve overall road safety.

EDT is an important part of the learning process, but you will also need lots of practice and may need more lesson to become a safe driver.

The EDT Course and content

The EDT course consists of 12, approximately one-hour long lessons. In these 12 hours, you will learn about critical driving skills, and improve your on road driving abilities.

At your first lesson, you will receive a logbook with your name, address, date of birth, and learning permit driver number. Remember to bring this book with you every time you have a lesson.

After each lesson, your progress will be recorded by our Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in your personal logbook.

Outside of the EDT lessons, we recommend you practice driving with an experienced, qualified driver next to you. They will supervise your driving practice and log your progress.

After having finished your EDT you will

  • Be a safer and better driver than before.
  • Know how to react in certain critical situations.
  • Have these essential skills for the rest of your life!

The 12 EDT lessons

The EDT consists of 12 lessons, each of about one hour in duration. Lessons should be around two weeks apart from another to give you time to practice, get feedback from your instructor and prepare for the next lesson.

The first eight lessons listed below should be taken in the sequence listed. The following lessons numbered nine to twelve, can be taken in any order.

  • Lesson 1: Car Controls and Safety Check: Before you get on the road, be sure your car is safe!
  • Lesson 2: Correct Positioning: Know your place on the road and avoid collisions!
  • Lesson 3: Changing Direction: Let others know what you’re about to do, and do it safely.
  • Lesson 4: Progression Management.
  • Lesson 5: Correct Positioning: An advanced version of the 2nd lesson.
  • Lesson 6: Anticipation and Reaction: Learn to anticipate what is about to happen and how to react!
  • Lesson 7: Sharing the Road: Sadly, you are not alone on the road and need to be aware of others.
  • Lesson 8: Driving Safely through traffic.
  • Lesson 9: Changing direction. (Complex situations)
  • Lesson 10: Speed management: Avoid fines and more importantly; unsafe situations. Know when and how to slow down or speed up safely and effectively.
  • Lesson 11: Driving calmly: Learn to always be in control, and never let fear take over.
  • Lesson 12: Night driving: In the dark, extra caution is necessary.
