Essential Driver Training, or EDT for short, is a training focused on teaching fundamental driving skills. The RSA introduced this mandatory course as part of the their Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme with the aim to improve overall road safety.
EDT is an important part of the learning process, but you will also need lots of practice and may need more lesson to become a safe driver.

The EDT course consists of 12, approximately one-hour long lessons. In these 12 hours, you will learn about critical driving skills, and improve your on road driving abilities.
At your first lesson, you will receive a logbook with your name, address, date of birth, and learning permit driver number. Remember to bring this book with you every time you have a lesson.
After each lesson, your progress will be recorded by our Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in your personal logbook.
Outside of the EDT lessons, we recommend you practice driving with an experienced, qualified driver next to you. They will supervise your driving practice and log your progress.

The EDT consists of 12 lessons, each of about one hour in duration. Lessons should be around two weeks apart from another to give you time to practice, get feedback from your instructor and prepare for the next lesson.
The first eight lessons listed below should be taken in the sequence listed. The following lessons numbered nine to twelve, can be taken in any order.
