How do I obtain a BE driving licence?

To be eligible for a category BE learner permit, you must possess a valid and full category B driving license. If you haven’t already passed the driver theory test for category B, you’ll need to do so before obtaining the category BE learner permit.

You can apply for the category BE learner permit online or in person at an NDLS (National Driver Licensing Service) center.

Once you’ve successfully passed the BE driving test, you can proceed to apply for the addition of category BE to your full driving license.

Trailer Driving Licence Categories

Having a category B driving license (car/jeep) allows you to tow a small trailer. However, if you intend to tow a larger trailer, you are required to obtain a category BE license.

Category B

You can tow a trailer where:

  • MAM1 no greater than 750 kg and/or
  • MAM1 of trailer exceeds 750 kg but the MAM1 of the vehicle and trailer combined does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Please be aware that, as a general rule, a category B license does not permit the towing of horseboxes or livestock trailers used for transporting animals.
